Transparency: The Bedrock of Accountability in Government

Unveiling the Shadows of Secrecy

The recent release of files pertaining to the JFK assassination serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive lack of transparency within our government. While this issue permeates various levels of governance, it often appears most pronounced at the federal level, where the cloak of national security is employed to obscure vital information from the public eye, much of which raises deeply troubling questions.

Transparency at State and Local Levels

At state and local levels, barriers to accessing government information typically revolve around procedural hurdles. Armed with an understanding of the law, patience, and adequate resources, individuals can generally access government records they seek, even when officials might prefer to keep them hidden.

The Federal Government: A Disturbing Lack of Transparency

The federal government, however, presents a distinct and unsettling challenge. Here, the mantle of national security is frequently invoked to justify withholding information on its actions, many of which tend to be disconcerting. Of particular relevance to our community, the recently released JFK files revealed unsettling plans, including the CIA’s consideration of bombing Cuban exiles in Miami and blaming these bombings on Fidel Castro’s regime.

The Consequences of Opaque Governance

Even when the government’s activities do not cross into morally indefensible territory, they can still exert significant harm. The lack of transparency effectively erodes the foundation of our democratic system. How can we, as citizens, make informed decisions about incumbent officials when we remain in the dark about vital aspects of their actions, decisions, and affiliations? In areas deemed matters of national security, the prevailing sentiment is that the average American voter has no right to know.

The National Security Argument

While the national security argument often revolves around preventing aid to enemies, it’s essential to recognize that without genuine transparency, we may not even have a clear understanding of who our adversaries are or why they hold that status. While some may be content to believe that elected officials possess an elevated wisdom beyond ordinary citizens, most politically aware individuals see a consistent pattern of questionable judgment across the board. Even in a world where incorruptible leaders reign, transparency remains a non-negotiable necessity.

Our Responsibility as Voters

The cornerstone of our democracy is the accountability of elected officials for their actions in office. However, a shroud of secrecy creates an insurmountable barrier between government and voters. It deprives us of the ability to fulfill our responsibility as citizens: to hold those in power accountable.

 Call for Transparency

Transparency is not a luxury but a fundamental requirement in a functioning democracy. It allows us to make informed choices, scrutinize government actions, and safeguard the principles upon which our nation was built. The release of information, like the JFK files, serves as a reminder of the urgent need for transparency at all levels of government, ensuring that accountability remains at the heart of our democratic process.
