Reaction to the Trump NY Indictment

Miami Libertarians’ Reaction to Trump’s Recent Indictment in New York City

By Hector Roos, LPMD Chair

Donald Trump’s indictment is the first criminal prosecution of a United States president in history. What he is charged with is ridiculous, especially when compared to what libertarians have argued that every US president has been guilty of, in particular, rampant war crimes overseas and human rights violations at home.

The repetition 34 times of a single victimless crime that Trump is accused of, all related to business bookkeeping, wouldn’t even be considered a crime – that is, if there was not a claim that ties the accusation to hiding a different “unspecified crime.” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has also refused to reveal what the unspecified crime is – yet another reason this case should be immediately dismissed.

It seems clear that this is yet another political prosecution that will fail, much like Trump’s impeachments and the special prosecutor investigation into “Russiagate,” all of which went nowhere. Bragg’s indictment is yet another unfortunate example of how politicized the American legal system has become.

Analyzing the situation through the lens of political science, the indictment represents two possible outcomes: polarizing Trump supporters into becoming violent and reinforcing the J6 narrative to continue restricting the actions of his supporters; and/or to give Trump a boost in sympathy from Republican primary voters who may give him another chance to secure the Republican presidential nomination (because Democrats think he will be a cinch to beat in 2024).

The indictment, J6, and the corporate press’ keen focus on culture wars are all sources of frustration for libertarians; they are designed to force people to lose focus, to keep them from realizing this is all noise to enable the “Duopoly” to maintain the status quo. Instead, the political establishment continues to support a status quo that is increasingly anti-individual freedom and more focused on the wealth transfer from the middle class to their politically connected cronies.

Many people residing in Miami have strong ties to countries that have failed due to their political establishments, which stopped operating for the people and debased their currencies by destroying their economies. In America, continue to have sufficient freedoms of self defense and movement, as well as the freedom to enter into commerce with one another; these ensure that government-induced starvation and violence are not much of a threat. And for these reasons, it is important for libertarians to lead by example by promoting responsible gun ownership, entrepreneurship, and networking. The matter of whether Trump is indicted or not should not matter as much as your ability to keep your family safe and healthy.
