Part of how the two parties maintain the illusion of opposition to each other is by publicly taking positions on opposite sides of oft discussed issues, even though there is very little difference in what they do when in office. One of the simplest such issues is fiscal responsibility. While our government is constantly running up the debt, most well reasoned individuals innately understand the folly of it because we are constantly working to pay off our own debts and avoid new ones. The term license has several meanings; all are related to the control, or self-control, of individuals in society.
Liberty of the individual is not without certain limitations imposed by Natural Law, i.e., relationships consonant with human nature. When human behavior becomes licentious and uncontrolled, it destroys the subtle working relationships that define liberty within a Commonwealth of human beings. Unlimited freedom to act, i.e., the state of social or political anarchy, if tolerated, would reduce humankind to the law, or rather the apparent lawlessness, of the jungle. Humans have the potential to become inhuman, i.e., “red in tooth and claw.”
